What is a live AI agent, and where do real-time agents work today?

A live AI agent is an AI agent that works with a person in real time, while that person is waiting: it talks on a phone call, answers in a chat window, translates a speaker as they speak, or clicks through a website while you watch. A background agent gets a task and reports back later. A live agent has a few hundred milliseconds to answer, so speed, interruptions and a clean handoff to a person matter as much as being right.

Most of the agents people search for as "real-time" or "interactive" fall into five groups. This post walks through each one with examples listed on AI Agents Live, explains what makes real time hard, and gives you a test you can run in an afternoon.

Voice agents on phone calls

Voice agents answer and make calls. They book appointments, qualify leads, take orders and answer the questions a receptionist hears all day. They listen, turn speech into text, decide what to say, and speak the answer back, all within a normal pause in conversation.

DialLink's AI Voice Agents automate customer calls and have a 4.7 rating. Johnni Ai works as an AI receptionist for small businesses, and Talkenzo answers your own phone when you are busy. Kwal runs recruiting phone screens.

If you want to build your own, ElevenLabs has an agent platform with a 4.8 rating, and I wrote a guide on building an ElevenLabs agent without a backend.

Live chat agents on your website and apps

A live chat agent answers visitors in the chat window while they are still on the page. The good ones answer from your help centre and your product data, take simple actions such as checking an order, and pass the conversation to a person with the full history when they reach their limit.

Sendbird builds AI agents for customer service across chat and messaging, with a 4.5 rating. Robylon AI is an assistant for support teams, and Zendesk Answer Bot works inside Zendesk.

Live translation and speaking practice

Some live agents sit between two people. Glossa.live translates a speaker in real time for churches and events, so each listener follows in their own language. Lingua Live is a free AI tutor you talk to when you practise a new language.

Agents in your meetings

Meeting agents join a call, take notes, track decisions and sometimes run the agenda. tl;dv records and summarises meetings and has a 4.6 rating. Equal Time takes notes in Zoom, Google Meet and Teams, and also tracks who speaks and for how long, to help keep meetings fair.

Agents that act on screen while you watch

The fifth group works in a browser or on a desktop. You give a goal, and the agent clicks, types and moves between pages while you watch, ready for you to step in. WorkBeaver is a computer-use agent with a 5.0 rating: you describe a task and it carries it out on your screen, across websites and desktop apps, on Windows and macOS. I cover browser agents in more depth in AI browsers and the future of browsing.

What makes real time hard

In conversation, people answer each other fast. A study of ten languages found that the typical gap between one speaker finishing and the next starting is about 200 milliseconds. A voice agent that takes two seconds feels broken, even when its answer is perfect.

Speed is the first challenge. Interruptions are the second: people talk over each other, change their mind mid-sentence and say "sorry, go on". A live agent has to stop speaking when the caller starts, and pick up the new thread. The third is the handoff. When the agent reaches the edge of what it can do, a person should take over with the whole conversation in front of them, so the customer never repeats themselves.

The fourth is honesty. People should know they are talking to an AI. The EU AI Act requires that people are told when they interact with an AI system, and it is good practice everywhere.

Test a live agent in one afternoon

  1. Call it or chat with it yourself, at a busy time of day, from a phone on mobile data.
  2. Interrupt it halfway through an answer and ask something else. Check that it stops and follows you.
  3. Ask the five questions your customers ask most, and one it should hand to a person.
  4. Speak with an accent, with background noise, and with a long pause, and see how it copes.
  5. Ask "am I talking to a robot?" and check that it tells you the truth.
  6. Read the transcript and the handoff note your team would receive.

If it passes, run it on a small share of real traffic for two weeks with a person reading every transcript, and widen it from there.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between a live AI agent and a chatbot?

A chatbot answers from a fixed script or a set of articles. A live AI agent understands the request, takes actions in your systems (booking, checking an order, updating a record) and adapts to the conversation as it happens.

What is a real-time AI agent platform?

It is a platform for building agents that talk or act while a person waits, usually with speech recognition, a language model, voice output, telephony or chat channels, and the tools to connect your data. ElevenLabs is one example listed on AI Agents Live.

Are live AI agents good enough for customer calls?

For common, well-defined calls such as booking, order status and opening hours, many teams use them today. Keep a fast route to a person for everything else, and read transcripts every week.

The Conversational and Customer Service categories on AI Agents Live list more live agents with their reviews.
